Jongmyo – Changgyeonggung Palace Course
Begin at Jongmyo, a Confucian shrine dedicated to memorial services of past kings in the Joseon Kingdom. Pass through the surrounding dense forest to see the unique architecture of Changgyeonggung Palace, another of the “Five Grand Palaces” of the Joseon kingdom.
Walking Course
Route : Jongmyo → Changgyeong Palace
Course Time : Approximately 2 hours 30 minutes
Meeting place : In front of the Jongmyo information booth (about 300 meters after the Jongmyo ticket counter.
(A 5-minute walk from Jongno 3 Station. Line Number 1 Exit 11, Line Number 3 Exit 8, Line Number 5 Exit 8)
Tourist Attractions
Added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1995, Jongmyo is the oldest preserved royal Confucian shrine. (Tel. 02-765-0195 Website –http://jm.cha.go.kr/Closed on Tuesdays) You start your journey in this place where a memorial service for the dead kings and queens of the Joseon Kingdom, called Jongmo Jeryeak, is held every year in May. This elaborate ceremony honors the dead through fantastic court music and dancing. Thought to be one of the longest structures in Asia at the time of its construction in 1394, the shrine will not disappoint. Cross the street to the well-preserved Changgyeonggung (Changgyeonggung Palace) where nature and traditional Korean architecture are harmoniously blended. (Tel. 02-762-8262 Website –http://www.cdg.go.kr/Closed on Tuesdays) Changgyeonggung Palace was originally the summer palace of rulers from the Goryeo Kingdom, but later became one of the “Five Grand Palaces” of Joseon.

+ Jongmyojerye & Jeryeak
Jongmyojerye means Royal Shrine Rite, and Jeryeak means Ritual Music. One of the most important ceremonies of the Joseon dynasty, the rite was held five times a year. Now, it is held on the first Sunday of May every year.
Changgyeonggung
the palace has been fully restored to its former glory, and illustrates a rare array of architectural quirks that reflect Joseon period geomancy.
